How does NAS Backup differ From Other Services?

NAS Backup acts like a normal backup but allows for network attached devices to be backed up. Some devices have built in firmware for backup services, but majority do not. Most NAS devices must be backed up through a workstation that has a mapped network drive letter. The software will recognize that it is a NAS device and place the backup in a folder identified with the workstation performing the backup. The data pipes through the local workstation and then to the online space. TAPNET has QNAP and Synology client to reside directly on NAS device simplifying the process.

How To Backup A NAS Device?

99% of NAS devices need to be backed up using a PC or MAC that has a mapped network drive connecting to the folders on the NAS that need to be backed up. When backing up a NAS through a mapped network drive the content of the NAS will appear on the web portal in the icon of the computer doing the backup. However, with QNAP and Synology, the devices can connect directly by installing our native backup client for those devices.
It is important that a computer is selected and the NAS backup performed ONLY from that one computer. Using multiple computers to backup 1 NAS device does NOT backup the NAS to the same backup space. They WILL be separate instances of the same data. To ensure that NAS devices with multiple Terabytes of Data are backed up quickly, select a computer that is fast and always on.

When does NAS Backup run?

NAS Backup that is being run as a NAS device backup is controlled by the backup software that is installed on the computer running the backup. The software can be setup on a schedule or using real time scanning. With a NAS device that has many files, it is recommended to use scheduled scanning with a larger lag time between scans so as to let the scan finish before the next one is scheduled to begin.
Once the initial backup is completed and there is not a significant number of files modified regularly then scans can be scheduled more frequently to ensure backups are completed within a reasonable time of changes. When a file is found that is not current with the version online, it is added to the transfer queue. - it just works in the background and constantly backs up your files as you work - your files are protected all of the time.

Where can I see the files I've backed up?

The files that you've backed up are all available from your secure web portal. Login with your TAPNET account e-mail address and password, and click on the left menu links to drill down the folders of the device that was used to backup through - you'll be able to browse your files just like you can in Windows. You can download files or folders from here with one click.

Can I get access to previous versions of files?

Yes - TAPNET Backup allows you to configure any number of revisions of any file. Using the TAPNET Cloud Backup client Restore tab initiate the restore process. Double click on the file to view it's properties - you'll see a list of historical versions here and can download whichever one you want.
